How to Survive the Salon Summer Slump

With the summer season just weeks ahead, now is a great time to strategize your salon’s summer goals to ensure your business stays booked and busy! Here are a few ways you can help your salon not just survive but thrive during the dreaded summer slump.

Ways to Beat the Summer Slump

1. Stock up on products!

If your distributor is running a promotion, this is a great opportunity to make sure you have inventory for a discounted price. Also, you won’t have to order as much when business is slow.

2. Refresh your menu.

Offer new services, treatments and add-ons geared towards summer stressed hair or skin. Think: hair repair treatments like the Oway Rebuilding Treatment or the Oway Sunway Treatment to remove sand, salt and chlorine buildup.

3. Bundle packages.

Bundling packages are great for clients to get their hands on services they really love for a great deal. Create high-value packages by bundling irresistible services or products for a special rate. This allows the client to receive a discount on services that they are already going to redeem throughout the year.

4. Give your social media a makeover.

Summer is all about relaxing and going on holiday, so why not create posts that appeal to that? Throw some summer hair tips, hairstyle tutorials, sale announcements every now and then so your clients will find value in following you. If you don’t have one, start one! It’s a smart way to communicate and promote ahead of time.

PRO TIP: This is also the perfect season to focus on growing your following. For example:

  1. At the reception area, have a sign that encourages clients to post a photo in the salon and check in. Reward them with loyalty points or a discount for posting.
  2. Post a selfie and tag a friend to give them a discount when they book an appointment.

This way, they advertise your business for you and give it more exposure without much cost to you.

5. Sidewalk sales

Sidewalk sales are a fun way to network and bring in new clientele. Round up the team for a “braid bar”. Or, coordinate a date with neighboring businesses to do a small block party.

6. Host a salon party.

Have one of your clients invite (as many people as your salon space can accommodate), offer beverages, snacks and teach them 15 minute tips and tricks from a pro. Offer discounts on retail purchased that night and if they book a future appointment.

7. Revamp your referral program.

Don’t forget to inform your clients of these benefits early. For example: During the month of June and July, get 20% off of your next service.
